Vice Commanders Column
Comrades, I can hardly believe that half of the Legion year is already over. I have been very busy the last six months regularly attending Districts and County Council meetings and visiting other areas and functions. I visited several Posts in the 4th Area met with the Commanders, Officers and membership, exchanged information and Ideas and offered my support. I found those visits to be most rewarding. I am now geared up for the second half after relaxing with family and friends during the Christmas Holiday.

I am very proud of the early bird posts, and the 100% posts. Manila Post 464 is at 155.56% and Gardena Post 187 is at 118%. There are 25 posts at 75% and better with many others close behind. We started out at a slow pace, but with these encouraging percentages I feel confident that each Post will make a concerted effort to reach its goal on or before delegate strength cut off date in May.

I would like to thank the District Commanders, the Membership Teams, the Post Commanders and, of course the 1st Vice Commanders, for their effort in getting the 4th Area to this point in membership. A special thanks goes to Bob Brown, our 4th Area Membership Chairman for a job well done.

My first, 4th Area Caucus was held at Lakewood post #498 in the 19th District. Many thanks to Jr. Past Commander Bill Clapp and Post #496 for their help in making my Caucus delete a success. The Caucus was not without challenges due to The Department Commission call-in on the same date, which resulted in a reduction in attendance. Several of the Commissioners on call-in are 4th Area officers. However, we did have a very good Caucus. District and Commission reports were excellent.

2008-2009 Candidates, Al Lennox, Fred Walton, Roy Nichols and Norm Clendenin found time to visit with us between breaks at the call-in. delete delete
During the month of December I spent two evenings, one at Pomona Post #30 and the other at Pacific Palisades Post #285, with the Department Commander Howard (Blow Your Horn) Darter and National Commander Marty Conatser. The National Commander was fired-up, he delivered a very impressive speech both times.

The second 4th Area Membership Workshop will be open to all Districts, Posts, ALA Units, SAL Squadrons and all members who are interested in membership. The workshop will be held at Bert Crossland Post #170, 1109 Van Ness Av., Torrance, CA. 90501, (310) 320-8060 on February 9, 2008, from 10:00am – 12:00 pm. The workshop will be presented by non other than 4th Area Membership Chairman Bob Brown.

My next 4th Area Caucus will be held February 2, 2008 at Southgate Post #335 located at 9535 California Av., Southgate, CA. 90280. PCC begins at 9:00 AM, Caucus to follow at 10:00 AM.
