Report of the Vice Commander

Enthusiasm, patriotism, voluntarism, survivalism, sensationalism, postmillennialism are just a few of the descriptions of the dramatic inspirational Members of the 2nd Area.  The leaders with fantastic support of the members of the 2nd Area fulfilled the very core values of The American Legion participating in all aspects and areas of commitment to the Legion first by serving God and Country and Service to each other and in the programs for the hospitalized veterans and programs and those in need.
The first caucus in the 2nd Area held at post 92 in San Mateo October 4, 2008 with ninety seven percent of committees, commissions and districts represented established and provided legitimate and proper credibility to the foundation that this was to be and outstanding year for Area 2. The depth and leadership prevailed within the Area and without hesitation opened the dialogue of the possibility of hosting the 2014 Department Convention in Santa Clara, California.
Area 2 had the honor of hosting the 44th Department of California Four Chaplain Interfaith Memorial Service at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco on February 7, 2009 with Department Commander Alan Lennox and Department Chaplain Henry J. Hicks presiding. We had the honor to also have the JR-ROTC units from San Francisco in attendance.  With the city voting in confidence, we will continue to keep up the fight to retain the JR-ROTC Units in the schools.
The magnificent transformation of District Eight under District Commander Michael Gerold and his sensational staff propelled the District from last place in membership to the very top heading toward the department convention in Riverside this year. These numbers hardly recognize the fact the programs of The American Legion were fulfilled dramatically. The reintroduction of quality in the programs of The American Legion in the 8th District prevailed through out the year with the 9th, 10th, 13th, 26th, and 28th providing quality and dedicated leadership with help and guidance.  The youth programs continue with great success with all six districts participating in the area oratorical contest held at Pacifica post 238 under the direction of 2nd Area oratorical chairman Bob Biby. The Boys State and baseball programs continue to grow in the area.
The Second Area had the pleasure of hosting National Commander David Rehbein in his first official visit to California through the hard work of Ralph Jacob providing the visitation to the veteran’s hospital in Palo Alto. The same night Commander Rehbein was party to a great reception at department headquarters given by District Eight.
It was an honor to have a magnificent staff comprised of Adjutant Paul Terry, Historian Janet Wilson, Sgt-at-Arms Walter Waite III, Chaplain Michael Ryan, Distinguished Guest Chairman Joseph Paynter and Judge Advocate Jack O’Leary.
The Second Area 2 caucus was held in March 7, 2009 at the fabulous Post 31 in Salinas with Post Commander James Scariot and his hard working post members hosting this spectacular event. We had the honor of having Department Commander Alan Lennox presence briefly preceding his departure to attend the funeral of Past Department Commander James Hackney.
There were so many meaningful events this year, and among those are being part of the USCG Cutter Bertholf commissioning at Alameda, California August 4, 2008; opening the ceremonies of the cancer relay for life July 19, 2008 in which $ 127,000 was raised for the cause; and being one of the honored guests at the United Veterans Council 90th annual Veterans Day parade in San Jose November 11 2008 under the direction of chairperson Gene Fanucchi of District 13. The ride to recovery cycling event from San Francisco to Los Angeles commencing September 28 was welcomed along the way with refreshments and lodging along the way provided by districts 8, 26, 13, and 28.
The women’s military week celebration march 21, 2009 held in Alameda was a tremendous testimonial to the great part the gals played in service to our country.  A special thanks for Commander A.C. Ralston of San Mateo Post 82 and Commander James Scariot of Post 31 in Salinas for all their help this year. I am grateful for membership chairman Ralph Jacob for the expert advice given to the 1st vice commanders in the Districts and post members for the membership enrollment. The support of 2nd Area Past Vice Commander Vince Rios during the year was truly Appreciated.
I wish to congratulate Department Commander Lennox and his staff for the year of enthusiasm they brought to The American Legion and to Department Adjutant Bill Siler iii and his staff that pitched in to form a great nucleus of workers for the department.
