Dick drove cross country from Missouri to California in the late 1930's with his younger cousin to find work for himself and his parents in the orchards and fields of Merced County. He returned to serve his country in early 1942 in the U.S. Navy serving in the South Pacific aboard a battleship escort vessel during World Ward II. He earned a purple heart and many other battle service medals during his six years in the U.S. Navy.
He returned to Merced to marry and raise four children. He worked as the Superintendent of Acacia Van & Storage for over 25 years. Dick was a life-time member of the American Legion Post 83 in Merced and it's club manager for several years. He was also a member of the Merced Elks Club.

One of his favorite past-times was talking politics; he ran for City Council of West Sacramento during its first attempt at incorporation. Homer also loved mystery novels-- he loved the “who dun it’s”. One of his favorites television programs was the old Perry Mason series. Homer had the “gift of gab” which served him well in his life as a bartender, club manager and, most recently, in his Insurance business.
