    Roy A. Fate
    Norco Post 328
    District 21 Commander 1997-98

Roy FateWhen a Past Commander transfers to Post Everlasting, we have the "Draping of the Charter" ceremony. The Post charter remains draped for thirty days. We had this ceremony for Roy before this evening's (8/21/2007) General Membership meeting. Our hall was full. Roy's brother, a member of Norco Post 328, attended this meeting.Army Birthday Day with Roy at Post 328

Everyone has a story to tell about Roy. I can't tell you how many members have told me they wake up several times at night thinking about him. Roy cooked, plumbed, organized parties, and stepped up to help whenever needed.

When we wanted to know something about the Legion we went to Roy.  If we needed to know who to contact in the Legion to get something done we asked Roy. Tonight when the minutes, of our last Executive Board and General Meeting were read, Roy's name was mentioned several times.
Roy Fate on Memorial Day 2004
When the names of new members were brought up tonight for voting into membership of our Post, guess what? Roy had recruited two out of the five voted in.

There will be a Memorial Service for Roy on Saturday morning September 22, 2007. The ceremony will begin in our parking lot at the eleventh hour with the Norco Post 328 Color Guard.

Respectfully... JD Delmer, Norco Post 328

Roy A. FateNorco veteran, Legion member, Roy Fate, dies
By SARAH GORDON
The Press-Enterprise Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Roy Fate was probably one of the most involved members of the American Legion Post 328 in Norco. Legion members on Monday talked fondly about their friend who was hit by a train Saturday morning and died at Riverside Community Hospital shortly afterward. They remembered a boisterous veteran with a kind heart.

"You'd walk in the room and you'd hear, 'Hey Sullivan, how you doing? Come have a drink,' Norco Mayor Harvey Sullivan, a Legionnaire, said. "Everyone in the place knew you'd arrived if Roy saw you first." The Legion members who gathered Monday for drinks, lunch and commiseration at the Norco post on Old Hamner Road pondered what they would do without Mr. Fate's booming voice or his perennial involvement in the veterans organization.

Mr. Fate, 55, was hit by a train about 11:30 Saturday morning as he crossed the tracks on foot on Joy Street in Corona, Corona police Sgt. Neil Reynolds said. He died a short time later at Riverside Community Hospital. According to investigators, he apparently stepped into the path of a westbound train just after an eastbound train had passed. Investigators are treating the incident as an accident.

Members of the Norco American Legion post said Mr. Fate was an Army veteran who served as a paratrooper in the Vietnam War and ultimately devoted himself to the Legion. "I think the things he loved most in life were the Legion and his dogs," said Ken Thomas, an Army veteran who knew Mr. Fate for 15 years. "Roy was like rust, he was everywhere," said post member Terry Garrett. In his more than two decades with the organization, Mr. Fate served almost every officer position in the club, including commander. From 1997 to 1998, he also served as Legion district commander for an area that included Riverside and San Bernardino.

Whether he was helping stripe the parking lot or masterminding the post's annual Army Birthday Party celebration and fundraiser, Mr. Fate had his hands in every activity, keeping hall events running smoothly, fellow members said. "He was true to the course," recalled Sullivan. "If he was working on something, you could count on him to finish it."

He became widely known for his stentorian opinions, quirks, and generosity. Mr. Fate loved to cook at the Norco hall, and oversaw the installation of a new kitchen. When health inspectors pointed out flaws last week, Mr. Fate characteristically spoke his mind, said friend and post Adjunct Denny Morton. "He went after them like a wolf after a lamb chop," he said. He frequently told fellow members, "I love you like a brother," many Norco post members recalled Monday. Member Skip Davidovich recalled how Mr. Fate saved him $2,000 by helping fix leaking underground pipes at his house at no charge.

Mr. Fate earned a modest living as a part-time plumber, Morton said. His longtime girlfriend Lynn Welliver died of cancer a year ago, and after that he lived alone with his two dogs. He had no children.

A brother in Murrieta could not be reached Monday.

The Norco American Legion Post is planning a memorial service for Mr. Fate, and is accepting contributions at P.O. Box 207, Norco CA, 92860.

    Mel Foronda
    August 28,1948 - May 31, 2005
Auxiliary Department Accountant/Bookkeeper since June 1985

Mel ForondaToday, we have had a great loss. Our faithful Accountant/Bookkeeper Mel went to live with our Lord. Mel, has been with the Department of California since 1985 and as anyone who had called the office and spoke with her can tell you she was always helpful and professional. She will surely be missed.

She was visiting family in the Philippines so she was with loved ones. Please would each of you just take a moment of your time to say a special prayer for her family and their loss.

I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Psalm 23:6, I believe that the bible teaches that heaven is a literal place. Is it of the stars? I don't know. I can't even speculate. The Bible doesn't inform us. I'm not worried about where it is. I know it will be where Jesus is.

Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift! 2 Corinthians 9:15, I reached out for your gift of Jesus and received forgiveness and eternal life.

Thank you, my heavenly Father.

We should rejoice and celebrate her life and the honor of knowing her these past years. Someday we will be with her and all our other friends and family who have gone before. Please don't take life for granted! Be kind to each other each day and treat it as if it were your last. You will find you are happier and those around you will be also. We are only here to visit for a short time, so remember to love one another.

Respectfully Reported... Jackie Lay, Department Chaplain & Friend

Joe Flores aka Poppa Joe, a WWII Veteran, came to learn first hand the meaning of protection and support under the International Red Cross Flag in the Pacific when his Navy Ship, a destroyer, was sunk during the Coral Sea battle. His raft hoisted both the American flag and the Red Cross flag while floating aimlessly for three weeks until rescued.

He spent many months recuperating at the General Letterman’s Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii while observing the Red Cross flag and flying high on the Hospital flagpole. Likewise, during his stay at the Eisenhower Annex II at Yountville, Joe expressed gratitude for the Red Cross flag.

He always had a soft heart for the US military nursing corps in beautiful starched white uniforms and also expressed gratitude at the VHC for compassionate caring and loving nurses and supporting staff.

The special trust fund will ensure that a Red Cross flag will fly in perpetuity at his beloved Country Club at the Veterans Home of California at Yountville’s Norman B. Holderman Hospital.

    Frederick Ferguson
    Seaside Post 591

Fred was born on July 29, 1931 in Emlenton, PA and died December 1, 2004 in Seaside, CA. He retired from the United States Army after servicing 22 years and was a veteran of two wars Korea and Vietnam. He distinguished himself by demonstrating excellent professional abilities and dedication to duty. He strongly believed in duty to God and Country, and had strong family values. He also retired from civil service. He served in many of the military service organizations giving service to the military veteran communities. He particularly dedicated himself to The American Legion where he filled both appointed and elective officer positions giving service to the all military veterans he came in contact with. He endured strong convictions of what he thought being a "Legionnaire" community meant. He said, “If you are a legionnaire, you're a good legionnaire otherwise you are not crap."

He was a Past Commander of VFW Seamont Post 8679, and served active for a good many years. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post 591 Seaside and Past District Commander of the 28th District, Past President of the Past Commanders Club, 28th Outpost, and was Past Chef de Gare of the Voiture. He was instrumental in organizing the first Special Olympics on the Monterey Peninsula and established the Seaside Halloween and Senior Citizen Christmas Dinners at the Oldemyer Center. He helped to reestablished the 7th infantry division Alumnus Association and provided leadership in the Army Association. There was never a time when someone came to Fred to ask for help on matters that concerned veterans or his friends when he would not take the time to help with time or money. He will long be remembered by "His Community."

He is survived by his lovingly wife Kinue Ferguson who has stood by his side through the good times and the bad times and often paid the price of having Fred at her side. We all love Kim and we pray for her to the adjustments she must make in her life without Fred.

Some of us remember Fred's children who are Sandra, Ken, and Archie who Fred dearly loved and enjoyed. They too will have our prayers so they too can overcome this great loss. We sincerely regret that Fred will not be here to see his Grandchildren grow. Nonetheless, he will be looking down on all his family and if the listen closely they will hear him bellow should they falter.

Burial Services: Monday, December 6 - 1:30 pm at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. Legionnaire Memorial services will follow at "Fred's American Legion Post 591" in Seaside.

In closing this Obituary I want to say, "They Don't Make Them Like Fred, No More!"

Maybe I shouldn't say this, I'm still about... Abel Quinones

Jack was my friend, my "Brother" and a Charter Member of the District 9 American Legion Riders. He died as a Proud Warrior fighting cancer, to the very end. He shall be missed by many. May God Bless and Keep him always. Please view http://www.rolling9s.com/jackbio.htm This link is our tribute to him.

Thank you,
For God and Country
