Judge John A. "Jack" Ertola, Ret. Nov. 4, 1926 - Sept. 10, 2007 Native San Franciscan, passed away peacefully in San Francisco with his family beside him. Preceded in death by his parents Dr. Charles A. Ertola and Marie V. Ferro Ertola Gatti. Adored husband of Shirley Clark Ertola for 57 years. Cherished father of Chad (Frances) Ertola, Jill (Mark) Shustoff; idolized grandfather of Corina (Matthew) Hermann and Laura (Damian) Crosby, Emily Ertola, Charlie Ertola; proud great- grandpa of Allison Marie and Connor Jackson Hermann. Also survived by his dear brother Chad (Beryl) Ertola and family; loving Auntie Rose Costa; cousins, Gerald Amey, Carol Harrison, Dave Costa, Mike Costa, Ron Ertola, Joe and Johnny Ferrando, Sis Milon, Angie Moretton, and families; stepbrothers, Richard and Edward Gatti and their families; as well as many loving relatives in the Clark, Corcorran, Callaghan, Campbell, Hoes, King, Shustoff, Sutherland and Brunner families. He cherished his loyal and steadfast friends who spanned from early childhood to the present. His career included the private practice of law with Scampini, Mortara and Ertola; member and president of San Francisco Board of Supervisors; member and counsel of California Veterans' Board; San Francisco Superior Court judge; president of San Francisco Fire Commission. He was an avid horseman and member of the Sonoma Co. Trailblazers. Jack's trusted horse, Paint, predeceased him by two weeks at St. Vincent's School for Boys and will be saddled and ready for him. He was Kingfish of the Calamari Club. Member of the American Legion Galileo Post 236 and Golden Gate Speranza Lodge No. 30 F.&A.M. Jack's life included his participation in many other civic and philanthropic organizations that benefited from his enthusiasm and dedication. The family especially thanks Jack's devoted caregivers Henry Sanz and Mere Drevanavuku for their constant, loving care and support for so many years. We are grateful to Dr. William Seeley and Dr. Chadwick Christine, neurologists from UCSF for their wisdom, kindness and gentle patience; CPMC Hospital Medical Staff; Sutter VNA & Hospice; Heritage Health Center Staff for their excellent and invaluable care to the end. Private family services were held. Later when the Navy would not let him fly in combat in Vietnam he joined the Army and flew helicopters in combat. Bill, now retired, also offered to fly in combat the first Gulf War as a civilian for FREE but was turned down due to his age; he was in his mid-seventies at the time! Respectfully... A memorial service was held in February at the Elks Lodge in Glendale.

MR. Ebell, a member of The American Legion in good standing with Kerman’s Post 355 for the past six years has transferred to Post Everlasting on January 28, 2007. His final resting place will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery located a few miles northwest of Santa Nella, CA.
Post 355 members will miss his help and humor at our post meetings.

Kip Engstrom went home to be with the Lord, peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 24, 2007, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Born October 5, 1927 in Sutter, California, Kip graduated from Sutter High School and attended Yuba College before enlisting in the service, where he served in the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Air Force Reserves during the Korean Conflict.
Kip managed the Middleton Implements operation in Woodland and the Western District for FISCO, before owning and operating the Big R Stores, Henigan & Shull, and Country West Sports in Modesto, West Sacramento, Petaluma and Woodland. During this time, he was also active in real estate development. After retiring in the mid-nineties, Kip consulted in the Sports Travel industry. A long-time local resident, Kip and his bride, Enis, moved from Yuba City to Woodland in 1952 where he became active in the community. Kip was a member of the American Legion, Carlton Club, Elk's Lodge, and Yolo Fliers Club in Woodland; the Rotary Club of West Sacramento; and the Sutter Club of Sacramento. He was also an active sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and the California Waterfowl Association (CWA).
A loving husband, father, ''pop-pop'' and brother, Kip will be missed by his wife of 55 years, Enis Masera Engstrom; his five sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Marsha, Mark and Anne, Dan and Cathy, Matt and Jennifer, and Eric and Sheila Engstrom; eleven grandchildren, Callie, Abbey, Mitchell, Emelie, Cory, Erin, Megan, Sarah, Kevin, Jacob and Joey Engstrom; and siblings, Gene Engstrom of Spokane, Washington and Lucille Nuse of Yuba City.He was preceded in death by his daughter, Janice; parents, Godfrey and Ethel; and brothers, Donald and Harold Engstrom.
Family and friends are invited to attend a vigil at McNary's Chapel on College Street, Sunday, January 28, 2007 at 7 PM; a funeral mass, officiated by Father Terry Fulton at Holy Rosary Church on Walnut Street, Monday, January 29, 2007 at 10 AM; graveside services, immediately following the mass at St. Joseph's Cemetery on West Street; and a celebration of life at Hotel Woodland on Main Street, following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, the Engstrom family requests that donations be made in Kip's name to West Sacramento Rotary Foundation (P.O. | top | Pedro R. Enriquez, age 85, a resident of Pittsburg, California passed away December 31, 2006. He was born November 18, 1921 at Fierro, New Mexico. He graduated from Gallup High School in Gallup, New Mexico. He was a member of the U.S. Steel workers and the VFW. Pedro served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He later retired from U.S. Steel Corporation. Some of his hobbies included fishing, camping and family Barbecue's.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther and his two sons, Ruben and Peter Jr. He is survived by his two brothers: Vincent and Joe Enriquez; two sisters: Dora Aguilar and Theresa Pomicpic; two daughters: Cissy and Cynthia Enriquez; 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with a recitation of the Rosary at 6:00 p.m., Friday, January 5, 2007 at Ivers & Alcorn Funeral Home, located at, 901 W. Main Street in Merced. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Merced. Father Angel Sotelo will officiate. The burial will follow at Calvary District Cemetery in Merced. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 83 Merced Honor Guard.

Dave was born on April 22, 1927 in Bristol South. He attended Bristol High School graduating in 1945. He enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and served in the Philipines. After his tour he returned to South Dakota and attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. In 1950 he moved to Merced, Ca. and began interesting careers beginning with working at Bank of America, Crocker National Bank, Prudential Insurance Co., Real Estates Sales and many years with Merced County Assessors Office as an Auditor/Appraiser, until he retired at 50. He then became a Building Contractor-Developer of single family homes.
His great interest was "Real Estating". After many years living in Merced most recently he and Carm moved to the country near LaGrange.
Dave was a long time member of The American Legion, Eagles, Elks and Merced Trade Club, of which he was a Director.
He leaves behind his wife of 37 years, Carmaletta (Carm) and two daughters, Linda Viani, Merced, Lisa Hogsett (husband Smitty) of Spokane, Wa. and Panama, a stepson, Steve Althoff, Merced, five grandsons, Matthew Ogletree, Southern California, Laren Viani and Landon Viani, Merced, Steven Althoff and Corey Althoff, Merced, sisters Dellia Carlson, Bristol, SD., Nina Van Hunnik (husband Johnny), Webster, SD and several nephews.. He was preceded in death by one sister Elphia Olson, and his parents Daniel and Nancy Easterby.
There will be a service Monday December 11, 2006 at 2 PM in the Chapel at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Avenue Hughson, Ca. , burial following service at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Erpelding, John (86) Passed away November 3, 2005. Born in Chicago in 1919, Erpelding grew up there and later graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He joined the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor, receiving his commission as an ensign in July 1943. In 1945, he was assigned to the USS Missouri, the last and biggest battleship ever built. John Erpelding was aboard the Missouri on the morning of September 2, 1945 when the Japanese signed the Instrument of Surrender for Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
A longtime attorney, Erpelding specialized in estate law. In 2004, Erpelding served as the Commander of the American Legion Post 283 in the Pacific Palisades. John served as Department Judge Advocate from 1998 - 2003.
Survivors include his three daughters, Marian Harris, Victoria Steele, and Gracia Warde; a stepdaughter, Melinda Takeuchi; and two grandchildren, Donna Lee Harris and Nicolas Takeuchi

It is with sadness and a heavy heart that I advise that I have just received word that Assistant Department Judge Advocate and Past Department Judge Advocate John Erpelding has passed to Post Evelasting.
John was a Christian gentleman, an outstanding Legionnaire and a friend to all. I will miss his sage advice and unrestrained support.

Arthur R. Evans was born in New York in 1918. Arthur and wife Evelyn of 66 years were high school sweethearts. Arthur served in the Army during World War 11 in the 88th Division in Italy.
Arthur and Evelyn moved from New Jersey to Sonoma County in 1994. He was an avid collector of Lionel trains. He was a member of the American Legion Post 21, also a member of the 40/8 Voiture 338 of Sonoma County.
Arthur is survived by his wife Evelyn of Windsor and daughter Judith Ann and husband Peter Van Inwegen of Penngrove; granddaughter Barbara Ann Schwank-Dopty and husband Jeffery; and grandson Brian Robert Kestler all of Santa Rosa, CA.
Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Windsor, CA on Thursday, February 3 at 11:00 am followed by committal services at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park in Sebastopol, CA.
