Leadership - Mission  Statement
To encourage members to utilize their  innate potentials, and develop within the potentials the  enthusiasm to function for the best interest of   The American Legion at all levels

The Leadership Commission members will be judging the nominations :
"LEGIONNAIRE OF THE YEAR" Award for the year 2009-10
"LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD” for the year 2009-10

The following rules will be used for the Legionnaire of Year Award:

  1. Submitted will be a snapshot and personal biography of the candidate, in sealed envelope, with only the Area marked on the outside of the envelope.  This envelope will not be opened until after selection is made at the Department Convention Committee meeting.
  2. A 200 word or less letter, as to why the person was chosen. Do not use Post or District letterhead stationery.
  3. No identification of the nominee will be in the letter presented.
No gender identification will be made: the word "Legionnaire" may be used instead. Dates of office in Post, District, Area, etc. will not be used, as this would tend to identify the nominee. If, when it gets to the Area Chairman and/or the Area Commander, there is such identification, the Area Chairman and/or the Area Commander will black out those items.
  4. Any violation of the rules will disqualify the candidate.
  5. The members of the Convention Leadership Committee, representing the Districts at the Department Convention, will make the decision as to the winner.

The following rules will be used for the Lifetime Achievement Award:

Also, the candidate must be in good standings with a minimum of 25 years or more as a member.
  3. No identification of the nominee will be in the letter presented.
No gender identification will be made:  the word  “Legionnaire” may be used instead.  Dates of office in Post, District, Area, etc., will not be used, as this would tend to identify the Nominee.  If, when it gets to the Area Leadership Commissioner, and there is such identification, the Area Leadership Commissioner will black out those items.
  4. Any violation of the rules will disqualify the candidate.
  5. The members of the Convention Leadership Committee, representing their Districts at the Department Convention, will make the decision as to the winner.

This information should be sent from Post to District; from District to Area; from Commissioner of the Area to the Chairman of the Leadership Commission, by June 1st, so the Commissioners may have time to review the nominations before going to Convention.

The Department Chairman will forward copies of the winning Area nominations to all Area Commissioners by June 5, 2010.
