W.W.II "Last Shot" Memorial |

|  97th Infantry Division was credited with firing the last official shot in the European Theatre of Operations during World War II. This shot was fired by PFC Domenic Mozzetta of Company B, 387th Infantry Regiment, 97th Division, fired at a German sniper near Klenovice, Czechoslovakia shortly before midnight, May 7, 1945, thus ending the greatest war in the history of mankind.
| | | |  At a past reunion, a committee of WWII Veterans from Company B concluded that an appropriate marker, to commemorate the "Last Shot", be erected in the Memorial Park at Ft. Benning, Georgia. This monument will serve to preserve the memory of the historic role played by the 97th Infantry Division in that conflict. The memorial is made of black granite with a bas relief of an M-1 rifle, symbolic of laying down of arms and the end of war. Appropriate inscriptions are shown on the sides recognizing all military services that contributed in bringing the WWII hostilities to an end. The committee raised the funds from individual veterans, veterans' organizations, businesses and other organizations. The monument was erected and was dedicated October 12, 2000. Homer Knight, of B Company, 387th Infantry, made the Dedication speech.

Dominic Mozzetta who fired the last shot in Europe suffered from Alzheimer's Disease and passed away 18 Dec 2001.

| The committee has solicited funds from individual veterans, veterans' organizations, businesses and other organizations that were interested in helping to make this project a reality. Funds are still being collected by Homer Knight of Kentucky, a WWII veteran of the unit credited with firing the last shot. | 97th Infantry Group 2008 Reunion Meeting

| It's time to make plans for your reunion in October. Once again, we will be at the Tropicana Express Hotel in Laughlin. The rooms have been blocked out but must be individually reserved and guaranteed before September 27, 2008, using GROUP CODE #13647.
As with everything else these days, costs are up a little from last year. Room rate is $32.95 plus tax. The Santa Fe Room (located by he Ranch House Buffet Restaurant) for our daily gathering and Tuesday Evening banquet is $375.00. Going on our past numbers, that only figures to be approximately $37.50 per veteran for use of the facilities. They are working to keep out meal cost as close as possible to last year's menu price.
Something new this year is the requirement of a $500.00 deposit. Arrangements have been made for that. A collection fee ranging from 15% to 100% will be charged in the event we cancel our reunion.
