The veterans who reside in Monterey County and neighboring counties have patiently been waiting for a veterans cemetery to be built at the former Ft. Ord Army base. Years have passed only to see luxury homes, businesses, etc. built, but never a veterans cemetery. Many bills have been submitted by officials. These bills have been supported by state legislature, only to be be vetoed when the bill appears at the the Governor's desk. The reasons have been stated that there is no money to pay for the maintenance of the cemetery. However, no major efforts have been made to discuss with veterans and other interested parties, other options or more cost-effective methods to pay for the maintenance so that these bills can be passed.

A grassroots effort to get a veterans cemetery established at the former Ft. Ord Army base.

Three bills have failed passage at the Governor's desk. Our veterans have patiently waited for this to become a reality.

It is understood that California has been been a budget crisis. If there is no money, why are other bills passed and taxpayer dollars found to pay for these items? Our veterans are tired of hearing the excuses. When there is a war and they are asked to go, can they offer excuses not to go? Our veterans deserve better than this. The State of California has answered the call for every war from WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, etc. Our state has suffered a high number of soldier casualties, if not the highest combined.

Many families of veterans have to travel out of state or far to the nearest California military cemetery. Many widows are keeping the ashes of their loved ones, waiting for the day this cemetery is to be built. These families do not have the means to travel far. They want to be close to where their fallen are buried. These veterans have given so much and have asked for so little. Time is passing and veterans are dying everyday. There is no time to lose. This cemetery will serve not just as a resting place for soldiers to be buried with their fellow comrades, but also will be a historical site for our children. Young people can come and learn about these great people who sacrificed so much to make America better and free for them.

I am asking you, the elected officials of this state, to create new legislation to build a veterans cemetery at Ft. Ord, California. Let's work on this together to make this a reality for our veterans. They deserve, and they have earned it.

Sincerely,

Donna Teresa, volunteer, Teach Vietnam Network & Veterans History Project, both based in Washington, D.C.
