Questions & Answers for Y. E. C. Students

Where am I going?
You will be housed at Sly Park, a Science Center run by the Sacramento County Board of Education. It is located in El Dorado County, about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento and 15 miles northeast of Placerville.

Will we be camping out?
No. You will stay in cabins.

What will we eat?
You will eat breakfast and dinner in the dining hall at Sly Park each day. All meals are prepared by professional cooks and are well-balanced a nutritional.  On Saturday the staff prepares sandwich items as well as salads, chips, fruit and cookies. Sunday lunch is usually in the dining hall. You will have all the water you can drink throughout the weekend; sodas and/or Gatorade are available as well for lunch and evenings.

Should I bring snacks?
You may bring snacks for the bus trip to Sly Park. However, all food will be confiscated after your arrival due to the critters in the area. It will be properly stored and returned to you for the bus ride home.

Can my parents call me while I’m there?
There are no land-based or pay phones available for your use. If you have a cell phone your parents can call and leave a message which you can retrieve during free time which is prior to 7:00 breakfast, for about ½ hour after dinner, and from 9:30 to 10:30 in the evening. If your family has an EMERGENCY they can call my cell phone during the conference. The number is (916) 798-3317. It is off during some of the activities, but is checked often for messages. The Sly Park phone and Forest Service office phones are not answered on weekends. We have your contact numbers should there be an emergency at Sly Park.

Who runs the program?
The partnership between The American Legion and US Forest Service is unique to the State of California. While the Legion financially sponsors each student, the Forest Service has staff with us 24/7 throughout the conference. They lead all activities and instructions.  The Legion-side volunteers participate as counselors.

When do I leave? Where do I catch the bus?

Your sponsoring Post should provide you with this information.   If you don’t have a contact number, you can call me directly and I will provide the name and number of the person who should be in touch with you.
