San Francisco Veterans Day Parade

by John Caldera, Commander, Post #315 of the American Legion
Member, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Commission

On behalf of the Bob Basker Post #315 of the American Legion, the Veterans For Peace Chapter 69 and the San Francisco Veterans Speakers Alliance, I would like to thank the hundreds of citizens of San Francisco and visiting guests of our City who took the time out of their Sunday afternoon to observe the San Francisco Veterans Day Parade. It was heartening this year to see more people observing this parade than the previous three years the Veterans Day Parade has been held.

Our parade contingent was honored and proud to have had the only elected San Francisco Official, San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi march with our troupe. To see a San Francisco Supervisor actually take the time out of his busy schedule to march in a parade with Veterans was inspiring.

Post #315 of the American Legion, originally known as the Federal Post, the Bob Basker Post was renamed after an American Army World War II Veteran. Bob Basker joined the US Army in December 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor deeply affected his view of the world. After his tour of duty and Honorable Discharge, Bob became active in the Civil Rights, Social Justice and Anti-Vietnam War Movements. Bob Basker died on April 6, 2001, at the Jewish Home in San Francisco. Bob will always be remembered for his charm, humor and steadfast dedication to the civil rights of all. Post #315 has dedicated its duty and objective to honor the ideals Bob held dear and fought so vehemently to defend.
