Department Secretary / Treasurer - Theresa Jacob
As the new Auxiliary starts the Department Office is still missing some of the paperwork that we need to have a successful year. For those Units which have not turned in their Certification of Unit Officers please send this form to the office ASAP. We need to have this information so that your Unit will receive the mailings, be listing in the Department roster and I need to send a list of Unit President’s to National.

In the first Unit mailing you will find the Fidelity Bond form, remember that this is an Obligation to the Department of CA for both Units and Districts. The cost of this is $5.50 for Units and $35.50 for Districts. Please make sure that your Unit and District numbers are on all checks and correspondence to the office. This helps to make sure that the correct Unit is credited.

If you need to change the address of the person who receives your Units mail please send a written request to the Department Secretary’s attention.

Here is a bright and shining year ahead. Please feel free to contact the office for any help that you need. We are here to help you.

Happy New Year Team California!

I know that we fell a little short of our 65% goal last month, but I know it wasn't because you weren't trying. The membership numbers are growing with each posting on our web page and for those of you who attended our "Tailgate Party" at mid-year, you know that many Units are achieving their 100% goal for this year.

Our "Specialty Team Coordinators" are standing by with help if any Units need assistance in reaching their members. Please take another look at your rosters to see who hasn't sent in their renewals yet and remind your members that they are in a delinquent status now and that their benefits of membership are in peril if they don't act quickly.

Sometimes our members forget about all the wonderful benefits our Auxiliary offers with their membership. We certainly don't want to lose those longtime members and the expertise they bring to our Units. I know that many of you have new members in your Units and hopefully they are going to be great assets to you with all the handouts in their "New Member" packets that you are using. The more they know about our organization, the better members they will become.

Congratulations to all those Units who have made goal so far and please continue to work membership. I'll see you in the end zone.

Are you supporting the Troops?

Do you have a bumper sticker or magnet on your car that states that you “Support the Troops”? But are you truly supporting the troops? We should all ask ourselves how we have shown support for the troops. We need to write our legislative representatives and let them know we need to ensure a sufficient Veterans Administrative budget that fills the health care demands of all veterans and especially those accessing their benefits for the first time. Ensure that the unique health care and benefit needs of Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans are met. We need more funding for research on traumatic brain injury and PTSD. We need to inform the legislators that the quality of life for all active-duty, National Guard and Reserve troops and family must be improved. Oppose any TRICARE fee increases.

These are just a few of the issues that we must inform our legislators that we care about to effectively support of troops. We could really send a message to Congress if every member of the American Legion Family in California wrote a letter to their representatives. Now that would be supporting our troops!

Other ways we can actively support the troops is to send packages, send letters/cards or email. Work with other groups in you area such as the Blue Star Mothers as they send packages. The USO through out the state can always use assistance with cookies/snack items, and phone cards.

May has been established as Military Appreciation Month. Start working on projects to show our troops we DO care. Remember the military families that are home. We could offer a few hours of taking care of the children to allow the mom or dad a break or maybe offer to assist with some home maintenance that is needed. Have we forgotten to check in with the family members of service personnel that gave their life for our freedom?

Please ask yourself – What have I done to support our troops?
